What does OEM/ODM mean in ceramics?
In the ceramic industry, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) and ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) are two related but distinct services:
- OEM: You provide the design, specifications, or sample. The manufacturer produces exactly what you specify, with your brand logo, packaging, and quality standards. You own the design.
- ODM: The manufacturer designs the product based on your brief ("We need a modern hotel dinner plate in matte black, 27cm"). They handle shape design, glaze selection, and decoration. You approve and brand it.
Most ceramic factories in China offer both. The key question is: how much of the design do you want to control? If you have exact specifications, OEM is faster. If you have a concept but need design help, ODM adds 12 weeks but gives you professional design input.
What can you customize?
A ceramic factory worth working with can customize every aspect of the product. Here is the full list:
| Dimension | Options | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Round, square, oval, organic free-form | Custom shapes require a new mold (one-time tooling) |
| Size | Any diameter/height within kiln limits | Standard sizes use existing molds; custom sizes need new tooling |
| Body color | White, bone white, ivory, custom tinted | Custom tints require a minimum glaze batch |
| Glaze | Clear, reactive, matte, glossy, crackle | Reactive glazes produce unique flowing patterns per piece |
| Decoration | Underglaze decal, overglaze decal, hand-painted | Decals are most cost-effective; hand-painting is premium tier |
| Logo/Mark | Embossed, printed, stamped on base | Embossed requires mold modification; printed is quicker to set up |
| Packaging | Bulk, color box, gift box, master carton | Bulk is most economical; gift boxes add the most value for retail |
| Gold/Silver rim | Hand-applied gold or silver band on rim | Premium finish, adds perceived value and elegance |
MOQ by product type
Minimum order quantity depends on whether you are using an existing mold (stock shape) or creating a new one. Here are typical MOQ ranges:
| Scenario | MOQ | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stock shape + stock glaze + your decal/logo | 200–500 pcs per item | Lowest MOQ, fastest turnaround |
| Stock shape + custom glaze color | 500–1,000 pcs per item | Glaze formulation requires a minimum batch |
| Custom shape (new mold) | 1,000–3,000 pcs per item | Mold cost is amortized across the run |
| Full custom (shape + glaze + packaging) | 3,000+ pcs per item | Full ODM project from scratch |
| Custom packaging only (stock product) | 500–1,000 pcs | Box printing has setup minimums |
First-time buyer tip: Many manufacturers are willing to negotiate on MOQ for a first order, especially if you commit to reorders. Do not be afraid to ask, but also do not expect a factory to tool up a custom mold for 200 pieces. That is not economically viable for either side.
Production timeline: from design to shipment
Here is a realistic timeline for a custom ceramic project. These are typical ranges, actual time depends on complexity and factory load:
Design consultation & quote
1–3 days. You share specifications, references, or samples. Factory reviews feasibility and sends a quote with MOQ, unit price, and timeline.
3D render or hand sketch
3–7 days. For custom shapes, the design team creates 3D renders or detailed sketches for your approval. For stock shapes with custom decoration, this step is skipped.
Mold making (custom shapes only)
7–15 days. The plaster mold is carved, refined, and tested. First trial pieces are pulled for shape verification.
Sample production & approval
10–15 days. A full production-standard sample is made, correct glaze, correct decoration, correct packaging. You approve or request changes. This is your last chance to revise.
Bulk production
30–45 days. The full order goes into production: casting/jiggering, bisque firing, glazing, decoration, glaze firing, quality inspection, packing.
Quality inspection & shipping
3–5 days. Final QC, packing into master cartons, container loading. Sea freight to most destinations takes 15–35 days depending on port.
Total timeline: 45–60 days for stock-shape customization. 60–90 days for full custom ODM projects including new mold. Rush production can shave 10–15 days but requires advance arrangement.
